The “Parish Mass” is celebrated in church every Sunday at 10.30am. A team of bell-ringers usually calls the people to worship using the restored ring of bells in the tower. The Mass is celebrated using many of the rich symbols of “catholic” liturgy: often involving candles, incense, colour and movement. The liturgy is formal, but very definitely not stuffy. Hymns, songs, and many parts of the service are sung, accompanied by organ and a small choir. We aim to raise the heart, mind and soul to enter into the mystery of the God who is both immanent (here and now) and transcendent (beyond time, space and human imagination). Lay people take a leading role in the service as singers, altar servers, readers, intercessors, etc. The Mass lasts about an hour, and is followed by refreshments in church.

On the first Sunday of every month we aim to make the Sunday 10.30am Parish Mass very much an “all-age” experience with a more informal approach to the liturgy and by including a variety of participatory activities during the homily/sermon and the intercessions. Children gather around the altar at the Offertory and hold candles during the Eucharistic Prayer. On these Sundays we try to ensure that the Parish Mass takes less than an hour.

The Mass is also celebrated during the week, in a quieter and more reflective way. These services take less than half-an-hour, and at Darton the Mass is on Tuesdays at 7pm and on Thursdays at 9.30am.
